Before our journey into distilled spirits, we thought vermouth was just used as an ingredient in cocktails similar to how bitters are used, this is not the case. Martini, located just south of the Alps near Turin Italy, was the original producer of sweet vermouth. They created this as a fortified wine using a secret blend of wines along with a selection of 40 botanicals that creates the unique flavor profile it is known for.
It has an amber-brown coloring to its appearance.
The nose was light to medium with notes that reminded you of dark candy, or sour horehound candy.
The palate was short and simple that provided red fruit, grape, and herbal tea, along with a medicinal note. It was sweet which could have happened if the fermentation was stopped early to keep some sugar in the wine or from sugars added on the back end.
We do not find this to be a spirit that you should drink on its own. There is a reason why it became a cocktail ingredient.
