Tequila is still a new spirit to us. We have had the shots at parties before with other low-end options that would make the night end with a head in a bucket and a hangover the next morning. Even though we were hesitant we still decided to give it another try and check out what is available as a 100% blue agave tequila instead of a mixture.
To be called tequila it must be made in the region of Tequila located west of Jalisco Mexico, containing at least 51% agave in the mash bill. Silver or Blanco is unaged, Reposado is aged between 2-12 months, and Anejo is aged for over 12 months. The next step up is using 100% blue agave for the mash bill instead of adding other fermentables.
As with most unaged spirits, this was crystal clear and you can see clearly through it.
The nose was light to medium with notes of bell pepper, herbs, garden, pepper, smokey, and a bit of thyme.
The palate produced a medium finish with strong hints of bell pepper. There were also mixed herbs, light smoke, basil, and finished with a light minty mouth feel.
The 100% Blue Agave was definitely an improvement over the Jose Quervos we have had in the past. A tequila like this wouldn't necessarily be something to drink neat or on the rocks but it would make for a good classic margarita.
